Film debut Drew Barrymore sebagai seorang sutradara ini mengisahkan seorang gadis bernama Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page, "Juno") yang merasa tidak cocok berada di sebuah kota kecil Texas dimana ibunya (Marcia Gay Harden, "Mona Lisa Smile") mendorong dia untuk ikut dalam kontes kecantikan, walaupun sebenarnya ia tidak memiliki keinginan sedikitpun. Dalam perjalanan belanja ke kota, ia melihat sebuah acara Roller Derby dan menyakinkan dirinya untuk mengikuti acara tersebut. Sementara ibunya akan lebih suka Bliss meninggalkan sepatu roda dan kembali jadi ratu kecantikan.

Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page, "Juno") is a misfit in her Texan small town who allows her mother Brooke (Marcia Gay Harden, "Mona Lisa Smile") to push her into entering beauty pageants, despite having no interest in it herself. During a shopping trip to the city, she stumbles upon a Roller Derby event and knows she has found her calling. While her mother would prefer that Bliss unlace her skates and step back before the judges, the rebellious teen instead seeks the wisdom of rowdy mentor Malice in Wonderland (Kristen Wiig, "Knocked Up") in learning the tricks of the circuit track.
